Welcome to Podcast Marketing Trends Explained
[00:00:00] Jeremy: There's a lot to love about podcasting as a medium from its open nature, to the ability for your audience to really connect with you as the host and creator of the show, to the fact that the podcasting ecosystem is filled with incredibly talented, genuinely supportive people.
[00:00:16] Justin: But if there's one thing that podcasting doesn't have going for it, it's the lack of clear, reliable data to inform your creative and marketing decisions.
[00:00:26] Jeremy: Well, I mean that and the total lack of discoverability.
[00:00:30] Justin: Okay. Well, that's true. That's true. And actually the intersection of those two topics is really the foundation of this show.
[00:00:38] Jeremy: Welcome to Podcast Marketing Trends Explained. I'm Jeremy Enns from Podcast Marketing Academy.
[00:00:43] Justin: I'm Justin Jackson from Transistor.fm. We both have long histories in the podcasting space, both as creators and founders of companies that serve podcasters. And while we love this medium, and we owe our careers to it, the lack of data and the answers it could hold about the best way to grow and market shows has always frustrated us.
[00:01:05] Jeremy: As a creator, the lack of data makes it hard to know how you're doing compared to other shows that are out there, what's working and what's not for them, so that you can emulate some of the best practices that other creators are using to grow, And what kinds of benchmarks you should be using to gauge the effectiveness of your marketing. So at the start of 2023, we decided to do something about it. Specifically, we organized the largest ever survey focused on podcast marketing specifically, and in November published the first ever Podcast Marketing Trends Report.
[00:01:34] Justin: Now in the process, we surveyed more than 500 podcasters representing a diversity of genres, formats, topics, regions, languages and more. And asked them to submit their monthly download data, along with their anecdotal experiences to answer the big question on our mind, what works when it comes to growing podcasts?
[00:01:53] Jeremy: That wasn't too ambitious, was it?
[00:01:56] Justin: Maybe a little ambitious, but really the report was just the first step.
[00:02:02] Jeremy: In this podcast, we're going to dig into the data our research uncovered and dissect it to help you, as a podcast creator, marketer, or business owner, understand how to use the data to make smarter, better, informed decisions about how you create and market your show, and hopefully accelerate your growth along the way.
[00:02:18] Justin: In every episode we'll explore one piece of data from the report and talk about what it means. What it doesn't mean. The counter argument. An example of an outlier show that defied the data. And a clear, simple takeaway that you can use in your show
[00:02:36] Jeremy: While it's true that this is a show about data and math Our goal is to look past the numbers and get to the heart of exactly what they hint at, or perhaps even tell us outright about what it takes to grow a podcast in 2024 and beyond.
[00:02:50] Justin: If you're listening to this, we probably don't need to tell you you can subscribe in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. But given that we both teach people how to podcast effectively, we might as well follow the best practices and throw that in now. And we'll also be publishing this to YouTube.
[00:03:10] Jeremy: after you've checked out the show on YouTube or anywhere else, please be sure to leave a review wherever you listen or watch and let us know what you're hoping to get out of this show
[00:03:19] Justin:
[00:03:19] The first episode is coming out January, 2024. In the meantime, you can check out the full report at PodcastMarketingTrends.com/2023.
